ARNI Updates

Welcoming our first cohort of ARNI Postdoctoral Fellows!!! They will be working with multiple ARNI faculty on AI and neuroscience.

Haozhe Shan, ARNI Postdoc
Haozhe Shan, ARNI Postdoc
My name is Haozhe Shan and I recently completed my Ph.D. in Neuroscience from Harvard under the mentorship of Haim Sompolinsky. My research leverages quantitative tools from physics, statistics and other fields to discover computational principles behind neural systems, both biological and artificial. I aim to develop theoretical insights that help interpret complex experimental observations in neuroscience and understand AI models behind recent advances. I am particularly excited about studying how the brain solves problems that remain challenging for AI using biologically realistic mechanisms.

Medhi Azabou, ARNI Postdoc
Hi, my name is Mehdi Azabou and I’m excited to start as a postdoc at ARNI this Fall. I’ve just finished my Ph.D. in Machine Learning at Georgia Tech, where I worked on a number of projects at the intersection of neuroscience and AI. My research aims to democratize the use of AI tools in scientific research and enable novel applications in the field, particularly through the development of foundation models for neuroscience. I am interested in neural AI research because it holds the potential to advance brain-computer interfaces and deepen our understanding of the brain, ultimately facilitating new scientific discoveries and advancing our knowledge of biological intelligence.

ARNI NSF Site Visit 2024
ARNI NSF Site Visit 2024
On Sept 16-17, ARNI held its first NSF Site Visit to showcase our remarkable progress on all fronts in year one while establishing ARNI. The event highlighted our successful research collaborations and broadening participation programs. Additionally, our students had the chance to present their work during an amazing poster session. Thank you all for participating and making our first site visit a success.

Interdisciplinary Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Intersection of Human and Computer Vision

Candidates are sought for a postdoctoral researcher to join an interdisciplinary team of computer and human vision researchers studying the role of perceptual grouping, such as forms of symmetry, in object and scene categorization and 3-D shape reconstruction in both human and computer vision. Specifically, how can we leverage the important role that mid-level vision plays in the human vision system to inform the design of deep learning architectures for downstream computer vision tasks?  Conversely, can the resulting architectures yield models that better account for human vision performance on those same tasks?

Candidates should have a PhD in computer vision, psychology, cognitive science, AI, or computational neuroscience, with experience using, and innovating with, modern machine learning tools. It is essential that the candidates have a deep interest in how human vision can better inform computer vision and, conversely, how computer vision can help us better understand human vision.  The ideal candidate will have a background in one or more of the following research areas: 2-D or 3-D shape perception, 2-D or 3-D shape representation learning, object recognition, shape invariants and shape constraints, scene categorization, and perceptual grouping. Skills in image processing or classical computer vision and/or applied mathematics are desirable as well. We seek candidates with a strong interest in, and willingness to learn, how to apply cutting-edge ML techniques at the forefront of computer vision, informed by human vision research, though practical neural network design experience would be preferred.

Interested candidates should send a cover letter, CV, and a statement of their research experience and interests to Sven Dickinson (sven@cs.toronto.edu).

Open-rank Faculty Position in Computational and Behavioral Neuroscience in the UCLA Department of Psychology

"The UCLA Department of Psychology invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track or tenured faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor specializing in computational neuroscience and the use of advanced mathematical methods and theoretical approaches to understand behavior and brain processes. Potential applicants who have questions about how their specialization aligns with the position can inquire to Prof. Kate Wassum, search committee chair, at SearchCommittee@psych.ucla.edu."
