Computers vs The Brain
On Saturday, November 2, 2024, STEM Starters and ARNI teamed up to present “Computers vs The Brain” event at the Education Lab of the Columbia’s Mortimer B. Zuckerman Mind Brain and Behavior Institute.
Elementary through high school students and their families had the opportunity to visit seven interactive experiment stations designed to explore artificial intelligence (AI), neuroscience, and brain function topics through hands-on learning. The activities covered machine learning fundamentals, AI classification challenges, and building simple AI models to help students understand model bias and classification. Other stations showcased brain-inspired themes, with experiments on reaction speed, eye sensory perception, and neuron structure across species, highlighting how the brain processes information. A final “Distraction Station” allowed everyone to relax and engage in neuroscience arts and crafts by building their own neuron and brain hat!
ARNI offers engaging informal learning opportunities to youth and their families interested in learning more about the wonders of AI, neuroscience, and brain function, via interactive, hands-on activities. ARNI collaborates with the New York Hall of Science and graduate student outreach groups from Columbia University to make science accessible and fun. Stay tuned for the next events!
